Alarum within. Enter with drum and colours, Lear, Cordelia and their Forces, and exeunt.
A call to arms sounds offstage. Lear, Cordelia and their forces come in with a drum and flags, and then they leave.
Enter Edgar and Gloucester.
Edgar and Gloucester come in.

Here, father, take the shadow of this tree For your good host; pray that the right may thrive: If ever I return to you again, I’ll bring you comfort.
Here, father, take the shade of this tree as your kind host; pray that the just side wins. If I ever come back to you, I'll bring you comfort.

Exit Edgar.
Edgar leaves.
Alarum and retreat within. Enter Edgar.

What, in ill thoughts again? Men must endure Their going hence, even as their coming hither; Ripeness is all. Come on.
What, sunk in dark thoughts again? People must put up with their going out of the world, just as they put up with their coming into it. Being ripe is everything. Come on.
