Jaques and Lords come in, dressed like foresters.

  2. Jaques1

Which is he that killed the deer?

Which one of you killed the deer?

  3. First Lord2

    Sir, it was I.

    Sir, it was me.

  4. Jaques3

Let’s present him to the Duke, like a Roman conqueror, and it would do well to set the deer’s horns upon his head for a branch of victory. Have you no song, forester, for this purpose?

Let's present him to the Duke, like a Roman conqueror, and it would be a good idea to set the deer's horns on his head as a victory wreath. Have you no song, forester, for this occasion?

  5. Second Lord6

    Yes, sir.

    Yes, sir.

  6. Jaques7

Sing it. ’Tis no matter how it be in tune, so it make noise enough.

Sing it. It doesn't matter whether it's in tune, as long as it makes enough noise.

  8. Second Lord9

[Sings.] What shall he have that killed the deer? His leather skin and horns to wear. Then sing him home: [The rest shall bear this burden.] Take thou no scorn to wear the horn. It was a crest ere thou wast born. Thy father’s father wore it And thy father bore it. The horn, the horn, the lusty horn Is not a thing to laugh to scorn.

[He sings.] What shall the man have who killed the deer? His leather skin and horns to wear. Then sing him home: [The others sing this refrain.] Don't be ashamed to wear the horn. It was a heraldic crest before you were born. Your father's father wore it, and your father carried it. The horn, the horn, the vigorous horn is not a thing to be laughed at in scorn.

  9. Exeunt.

    They all leave.
