Tradition

Petrarch invented the sonnet in 14th-century Italy. Shakespeare and his English contemporaries reshaped it — swapping the Italian octave-and-sestet for three quatrains and a couplet that pivots in the final two lines.

Of all classical forms in English, the sonnet has the longest unbroken practice. Every century since the 16th has produced sonnets that hold up.

The differentiator

Why this isn't a generic AI generator.

What other generators do

Ask a vanilla LLM for a sonnet and you'll get fourteen lines that rhyme roughly and scan barely. Slant rhymes pass as exact. Lines are 8 syllables one moment, 12 the next.

Storgy · What we do

After generation we check rhyme scheme position-by-position via CMU phonetic matching, with a slant-rhyme detector for partial credit. Iambic pentameter is verified by counting syllables per line.
