Evolution of a Chef by Alyssa Jordan

Every Saturday, Luna walked to an adoption center. She put on a coat and two scarves. More often than not, she carried a piece of fruit. One Saturday, it was a peach. She rolled it between her fingers, by turns gentle, then violent.

Luna needed a family.

She wanted a child that wasn’t too young or too old, but one that was just bruised enough. Like an avocado or a mango, she thought; they were never good if they weren’t ripe, and she refused to buy either if their skin wouldn’t give when she pressed.

This was a lesson she had learned well over the years. Every household taught some variation, the kind that split over a cheekbone, or dappled her ribs in shades of sunset.

The worst ones dwelled beneath the skin.

Through the viewing window, children played on a jungle gym. They looked happy. Even if it was an act, she itched to shake the bubbly lightness from their smiles, tell them it was better to do it now than have it taken later.

Hide, hide, hide.

In Luna’s fist, the peach had lost all shape.
