Spider by Meg Pokrass

There’s a spider in the bathroom, I tell him. It’s six feet tall, I say. I wake him up and tell him to save me. I pee a few times a night and can’t imagine slipping into the cold bathroom alone, facing this spider head-on.

It’s frigid here in Siberia. Outside, nothing can live for long. We humans and insects are all in the same boat, hoping for food, praying for love.

Some people wander out and let the cold take care of their problems, let the cold win. Please, take care of Mr. Creepy, I say.

My husband goes into the bathroom in his bare feet, hands in the air. He stands there, letting the spider crawl right up his leg, right up to his face. His skin is warm, the spider is happy.

His legs are so long, perfect runways. They used to make me feel safe.

“This cute little dot?” my husband says. He says this to me about our spider problem. He calls it a dot. “How would you feel if you were trapped in someone else’s life?” he says.

This is a sample story from Meg’s forthcoming flash collection, “The Dog Seated Next to Me” (Pelekinesis Press, 2019).  Here is an early review of the collection.
