VOX by Christina Dalcher

To truly capture the essence of this book, I am going to write a review of only 100 words:

As relevant and terrifying as The Handmaid’s TaleVox is a dystopic nightmare brought to startling reality. With a focus on language and social interaction, Dalcher manages to perfectly convey a chilling atmosphere of fear, oppression, hatred and silence that enrages the reader (in a good way). Feminist slant aside, it reads just as well as a thriller, with electrifying pace that will have you racing through in one sitting and itching to talk about it.

The only downside: I figured out the conclusion long before the narrator, who is meant to have scientific genius. Regardless, I recommend to everyone.

I’m a writer, reader, novelist, and flash fiction addict. I’m a knitter, cross-stitcher, cook, and wife. I’ve lived on four continents and four islands, some of which overlap. I speak Italian with a hint of Florentine in it, and my Spanish used to be terrific. My heroes are Stephen King and Roald Dahl and Carl Sagan. I hope King lives a long and healthy life for years to come, but when he’s gone I’ll be sending him an engraved invitation to my Dead Person’s Dinner Party.

This is the tale of a town on the fringes of fear, of ordinary people and everyday objects transformed by terror and madness, a microcosm of the world where nothing is ever quite what it seems. This is a world where the unreal is real, where the familiar and friendly lure and deceive. On the outskirts of civilisation sits this solitary town. Home to the unhinged. Oblivion to outsiders.
