Well to say I was confused at the beginning, is an understatement. The first chapter is repeated three times offering three different explanations of the same event!! I won’t explain why; as it all becomes clear.
This is a detective novel but by no means does it follow any traditional story line. It is exceptionally weird to say the least, but as I was immersed into the plot, I quite enjoyed the quirky nature of it.
It is about a Private Investigator: or maybe two, and how after an incident involving them, they become embroiled in catching a drug cartel with gangs, murder and violence.
Adrian & Zooey Kimrean are genetic chimeras – siblings within one body, but whom have completely different personalities. Adrian is a scientific genius who will observe the tiniest piece of evidence or detail. Zooey on the other hand is female, outrageous and says exactly what her inner ego thinks. The combination of these two personalities, usually at loggerheads, has outrageous consequences.
The concept is ingenious which is refreshing and at times made me laugh aloud – not something I would usually expect from a detective novel!
Although the plot is dark, the writing is innovative and Cantero has the ability to convey the bizarre and quirky behaviours of the protagonists in a unique way. It is definitely a page turner as the reader has no idea what is going to happen next.
It is not really the thrill that weaves through this novel that makes it extraordinary, but the personalities and chaos of Adrian and Zooey. The hilarity and mayhem that ensues as they both try to solve the case is what keeps the reader engrossed until the end.
Anyone who likes the unusual and quirky should read this book, it is definitely not your predictable detective story. The imagination of Edgar Cantero is so extraordinary and different that the reader never really knows what is going to happen next.
